Tobacco Research Network (FORTE)

Welcome to FAS Tobacco Research Network! This initiative aims to strengthen collaboration across Sweden within tobacco research; to enable researchers identify existing projects and to support the production of new high quality tobacco research.

The website has two main areas:

  • a public space with information about the network and its activities including a databank on Swedish tobacco researchers – young and senior scientists – to better identify research partners for applications, research and publications.
  •  member section sporting collaboration among the member researchers across specialities and competences. Members can login to the Nätverk för Tobaksforskare Forum in the menu on the right.

If you wish to receive news about the network in your mailbox, sign up for the online newsletter on also in the menu on the right side of the screen.

Why FAS Tobacco Research Network?
Even though Sweden has the lowest rates of daily smoking in Europe; 12 and 13% in men and women, respectively (WHO report on the global tobacco epidemic, 2011) the consequences on health and society are still of huge concern. Interestingly, the prevalence of current smokers is not that outstanding in Sweden with 24% compared to 26% in Denmark and Finland, and 30% in Norway. In addition Sweden has the highest rate of current snus users; 26 and 7 % (WHO report on the global tobacco epidemic, 2011).

The field of tobacco research has many challenges that must be met to improve the tobacco research on short and longer term. For many tobacco researchers this area is not their primary research field, and special initiatives are required to develop and support future tobacco research to put Sweden back in a leading position. This is why the overall goal of the network is to support the establishment of more high-quality Swedish tobacco research. Specifically:

  • To identify ongoing efforts and promising upcoming research fields that would benefit from collaboration among different researchers and groups
  • To inspire to new comprehensive research initiatives lead by Sweden as well as issuing recommendations on their priority and methodological challenges
  • To exchange research knowledge and experience, including sharing of databases and pooled analyses of existing ones.
  • To develop an online platform for collaboration in practice – across specialities and competences – including a databank on Swedish tobacco researchers - young  and senior scientists – to better identify research partners for applications, research and publications

Members of the network are encouraged to explore the member forum to share experience and knowledge - and get to know each other.

The meeting report from the initial meeting is found in the menu on the right or via this link.
